Motorbike Rental Hanoi: The Ultimate Guide to Safe Riding in 2025

So, you’ve landed in the capital. The air is thick with the smell of bun cha, the sidewalks are overflowing with life, and the streets are a river of moving metal. You are ready to join the flow.

Searching for motorbike rental in Hanoi is easy. Finding a reliable bike that won’t break down halfway up a mountain pass? That is the hard part.

With hundreds of rental shops popping up in the Old Quarter—some offering bikes for as little as $5 a day—it is tempting to grab the cheapest set of keys you can find. But Vietnam’s roads are unforgiving, and the difference between a great trip and a nightmare often comes down to the machine between your legs.

At Rentabike Vietnam, we have been the trusted choice for expats and travelers since 2004. We’ve seen every scam, every breakdown, and every triumph. Here is everything you need to know before you rent a motorbike in Hanoi.

The "Real" vs. The "Fake": Know What You Are Renting

Honda XR190L in Danang Rentabike Vietnam

The most common trap for travelers searching for motorbike rental in Hanoi is the “Chinese Copy” scam.

You will see signs advertising a “Honda Win” for cheap. The hard truth? Honda stopped making the “Win” years ago. What you are renting is a Chinese copy with questionable brakes and an engine that vibrates so hard your hands will go numb after an hour.

The Solution: Always rent a Genuine Honda. HOW: Just ask to see a copy of the blue card.

Whether it is a semi-automatic Honda Blade, a manual Honda XR150, or a touring beast like the Honda CB500X, verify that it is a real Japanese machine. At Rentabike Vietnam, our entire fleet is genuine. We don’t do fakes.

The Checklist: How to Inspect Your Rental

Before you sign any paperwork or hand over a deposit, perform this 3-minute safety check. Any reputable Hanoi motorbike rental shop will encourage this. We also insist that you take the bike for a spin before you sign the contract. This allows us to make any tiny tweaks you might like.

  • Tires:
  • Are they bald? You need deep tread for the slick mountain roads of Ha Giang.

  • Chain:
  • Is it sagging? A loose chain can snap and lock your rear wheel.

  • Brakes:
  • Test both the front and rear brakes. They should feel firm, not spongy.

  • Lights & Horn:
  • Essential for communicating in Vietnamese traffic.

  • The Test Ride:
  • Don’t just sit on it. Ride it around the block. Listen for rattling and feel for wobbles.

Pro Tip: Ask about the maintenance schedule. At Rentabike Vietnam, our fleet is maintained by Western-trained mechanics who follow strict service intervals, not “fix-it-when-it-breaks” local repairs.

Picking the Right Bike for Your Route

Vietnam Motorcycle Rentals: Honda Vision - front left angle

Not all bikes are created equal. Your choice should depend entirely on where you plan to go.

  • City Commuting:
  • If you are just buzzing around West Lake or the Old Quarter, a Honda Airblade or Vision (scooters) is perfect. They are automatic, nimble, and have storage space.

  • The Ha Giang Loop:
  • This is steep, winding terrain. While many do it on scooters, a manual bike like the Honda XR150 offers engine braking and better suspension, making it much safer and more fun.

  • The Cross-Country Tour (Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh):
  • Comfort is king here. You want a bike that can handle 2,000km without breaking your back. The Honda CB500X or Royal Enfield Himalayan are the gold standards for this trip.

One-Way Rentals: The Freedom to Roam

Many travelers want to ride from North to South but don’t want to loop back. This is where one-way motorbike rental comes in.

Most small shops can’t offer this. They need their bike back in Hanoi. However, larger agencies like ours allow you to pick up in Hanoi and drop off in Da Nang or Ho Chi Minh City.

We also have an extensive library of FREE Route Maps for you to use. If there is anything you can’t find, just ask. We know.

Note: Be wary of “Free Drop-off” offers. Often, this means the bike is of lower quality because the company doesn’t care if it gets thrashed on the way down. We charge a transport fee because we ship our bikes back on professional trucks to ensure they are serviced by our head mechanics before the next customer rides them.

Licenses and Legality: The Elephant in the Room

Can you legally ride in Vietnam?

  • Under 50cc:
  • No license needed (but these bikes are too weak for touring). Find out Why we refuse to rent 50cc motorbikes for touring.

  • Over 50cc:
  • You need a valid Vietnamese license or an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your home country that is ratified under the 1968 Vienna Convention.

  • Insurance:
  • Most travel insurance policies will void your coverage if you are riding illegally.
We provide full briefings on the current legal landscape when you pick up your bike, ensuring you know exactly where you stand. Te get you started, this is great content on driving legally in Vietnamdriving legally in Vietnam that ensures you won’t get caught out

FAQ

Hanoi experiences heavy rain, especially in the summer monsoon season (May to September). Riding is possible, but you must drive slower and use high-quality rain gear. We recommend renting a bike with good tire tread (like our dual-sport XR150s) rather than small-wheel scooters, which can be slippery on wet asphalt. Always carry a poncho!
Fuel is very affordable in Vietnam. As of 2025, a liter of petrol costs roughly $0.90 – $1.10 USD. A full tank on a standard Honda XR150 costs about $8–$10 and will last you around 250km+ depending on the terrain. Gas stations are plentiful, even in the mountains. We wrote this: to help you avoid fuel anxiety.
Avoid Fuel Anxiety with the Honda CB500X
The “Blue Card” is the official ownership registration document of the motorbike. You do not need the original card to rent a bike (the rental shop keeps it for safekeeping). We provide you with a high-quality copy which is sufficient for police checks and hotels. Do not lose this copy!
While violent theft is rare, opportunistic theft happens if bikes are left unlocked overnight. Always park your bike in a designated “Gui Xe” (guarded parking lot) overnight or inside your hotel. All our rentals come with a strong U-lock or disc lock. Use it every time you park.
We strongly advise against learning to ride a manual clutch bike for the first time on the busy streets of Hanoi or the steep cliffs of Ha Giang. If you are a beginner, we recommend a semi-automatic (Honda Blade) or taking a 1-on-1 lesson with our team before your rental begins. Your safety is our priority.
