Local Mechanics in Vietnam

Updated 09/07/25
Local independant mechanic fixing our Honda Blade in his living room.

All over Vietnam you will find independant mechanics that have set up shop to service and repair motorbikes. These are unregulated service providers and as such you need to watch carefully the quality of their work. Most of them are friendly and helpful, and do their best to get you safely on your way.

If you plan to use one of these guys we insist that you call us before they touch the bike so that we can make sure they know exactly what they are doing. We can also help with price negotiations to avoid any mistakes in translation.

Local Mechanics in Vietnam

Local independant mechanic fixing our Honda Blade in his living room.

This is Tien, who is a local mechanic in Ha Giang province. He runs a small repair shop out of his house. Tien began an apprenticeship when he was 15 years old to a friend of his father’s who was also a mechanic. He is now 33 years old, married with two children and is working independantly.

Five years ago, when he saw the boom of tourists that were flooding into Ha Giang, he borrowed money from his brother and cousins in order to buy the tools he needed to set up shop. Unfortunately, the Covid pandemic set him back and he had to shut up shop for 2 years.

He has now been open again for two years. In the last year he has been able to pay off the loan and is now saving up in order to be able to set up a workshop in Yen Minh town.

He feels that his greatest weakness is that he speaks so little English. However, with the help of Google Translate, and sometimes his oldest son, he manages to communciate enough to get the job done.

The people of northern Ha Giang are hardy, pragmatic folk that do not give up easily and I am pretty sure that he will succeed.

  • Stay with your bike: Do Not leave your motorbike unattended at the mechanic’s, especially for significant repairs. This helps prevent parts from being swapped out for cheaper alternatives without your knowledge.
  • Be aware of “foreigner rates”: Try to get a clear price upfront.
  • Test ride afterward: Always test drive the bike after any repair to ensure the problem is fixed and the bike feels safe.
  • Check replaced parts: Ask to see any parts that were replaced.
  • Mechanical breakdowns (not your fault): Reputable companies usually cover these repairs or offer a bike swap. Worn/Burnt Clutches: are not considered mechanical break down and you will be liable.
  • Damage due to your fault/negligence: You are responsible for all repair costs and associated costs such as transportation, extra rental days.
  • Flat tires: Are considered an act of Nature. We can assist with repair, but it is at your cost.
  • Unauthorized repairs: Strictly prohibited. Always contact us, 0904 392 423, BEFORE any repair / work is attempted.
Absolutely! Always agree on a price before any work starts. This prevents misunderstandings and potential overcharging. If they can’t give you an exact price, ask for a range or go elsewhere. Remember, we are always on hand to help with this.
For common Honda, Yamaha, and other popular brands, spare parts are widely available. You’ll find numerous shops selling parts, both genuine and aftermarket. Our advice is to stay away from less common or older bikes. Parts are be harder to source.
