Overview

Itinerary

Day 1: Hanoi – Pu Luong

the road down from hanoi to Pu Luong Nature Reserve
Set off in Hanoi, weaving through the city and straight into Vietnam’s rural heart. The ride soon opens up to winding roads, cool mountain air, and stretches of rice terraces spilling down the hillsides. Narrow roads twist through quiet valleys to to Pu Luong, where the real journey has just begun.
forest road from Lung Van to Pu Luong
A full-throttle day through limestone peaks and jungle backroads, climbing higher toward the Laos border. On the other side, Laos hits different with empty roads, dense forest, and hairpin climbs that roll all the way into Sam Neua. Expect big landscapes, fewer signs of life, and a serious shift in pace.
High-altitude roads carve through northern Laos, snaking past mist-covered peaks and hill villages. The occasionally demanding rides are rewarded with incredible views and as the day winds down, strange stone relics begin to appear in the grasslands — welcome to the Plain of Jars.
Sweeping views of jagged ridges and dense jungle start off the day’s ride. We take a detour to see the ruins in Muang Khouen. Tight hairpins followed by stretches of open road where speed meets silence make for one of the most thrilling parts of the adventure. Finish with a descent to the Mekong’s banks, where Luang Prabang’s golden temples and colonial streets await.
Wander ancient streets lined with French colonial architecture, or hike through lush jungle to the turquoise pools of Kuang Si Falls. Spend the morning watching the monks collect their alms in a quiet ritual and the afternoon relaxing by on the Mekong River before the road calls again.
Back on the road with rolling hills, quiet roads weaving through remote villages and dense forests. Smooth pavement meets unexpected curves, making for an excellent, flowing ride through beautiful scenery. Head into Laos’ rugged north, rich with hidden charm and open skies.
The road twists east through dense forest and steep climbs toward the Tay Trang border crossing back into Vietnam. Descend into Dien Bien Phu’s rugged valley — where a pivotal 1954 battle saw French forces surrounded and defeated by the Viet Minh, ending colonial rule in Indochina.
Winding through the soaring peaks of Lao Cai, the route climbs relentlessly along O Quy Ho Pass — known as “Heaven’s Gate” for its sweeping views, mist-cloaked forests, and towering cliffs that feel like the edge of the sky. Carve through mist-shrouded forests, opening onto panoramic mountain vistas that stretch for miles. The descent leads into Sa Pa, where crisp air and terraced fields welcome the evening.
Soak in the unique atmosphere of Sa Pa, a mountain town nestled among terraced rice fields and misty peaks. Known for its vibrant markets and rich cultural tapestry, Sa Pa invites exploration at any pace. Wander its colorful streets, sip tea with mountain views, or simply breathe in the crisp, cool air, this is the perfect moment to recharge before the journey continues.
Descending from Sa Pa’s mountains, the route slips onto quiet backroads, winding gently through peaceful countryside on the way to Thac Ba Lake — a sprawling reservoir scattered with emerald islands. A boat trip reveals hidden corners of this serene water world before a home-cooked meal awaits at a family-run homestay, offering a taste of local hospitality and tradition.
Tom takes his Honda CRF300L over a rickety wooden bridge in Yen Bai province.
Leaving the calm of Thac Ba Lake, the route follows winding rivers and quiet roads back toward Hanoi. The peaceful countryside slowly gives way to the city’s bustling outskirts as the ride approaches the capital. Arriving before rush hour, the journey concludes with a wind down with the team before the final farewells.
