Overview

Itinerary

Day 1: Vientiane – Vang Vieng

Begin your adventure by riding north out of Vientiane on Route 13, where smooth roads give way to the striking limestone karsts of Vang Vieng. This scenic town, set along the Nam Song River, is perfect for exploring caves, swimming in the Blue Lagoon, or simply soaking in the dramatic views.
A huge day today, so an early start. The route heads east before turning south toward Paksan, cutting through quiet villages and endless stretches of lush rice paddies. Smooth roads and a relaxed pace reveal a deeper view of rural Laos. The day winds down in the riverside town of Paksan, nestled along the banks of the Mekong.
An early start marks the beginning of a rewarding ride northeast toward Phonsavan, gateway to the mysterious Plain of Jars. The route climbs through shifting elevations and rolling hills, unfolding panoramic views and smooth, flowing tarmac. The day ends in Phonsavan, a quiet town steeped in history and surrounded by ancient enigma.
The UNESCO-listed Plain of Jars offers a striking backdrop for a day of exploration. Scattered across open fields and hillsides, the ancient stone jars spark curiosity and invite speculation about their origins. Nearby, the UXO Information Centre sheds light on the region’s more recent and turbulent past, adding depth to the experience.
The route heads west along mountain roads lined with forested hills and sweeping curves, offering views over deep valleys. Luang Prabang emerges at the confluence of the Mekong and Nam Khan rivers, its streets defined by elegant temples, French colonial architecture, and a lively night market.
A day in Luang Prabang begins with the serene alms giving ceremony at dawn, followed by visits to iconic temples steeped in history. In the afternoon, Kuang Si Waterfall offers refreshing swimming spots, or the Royal Palace Museum reveals the city’s royal heritage. The day closes with sunset views from Mount Phousi and dinner in the vibrant streets of the old town.
The journey northeast from Luang Prabang cuts through remote mountain terrain, where winding roads reveal dramatic, untouched scenery far from the tourist trail. Arrival in Vieng Xai brings entry to the historic cave city once used by the Pathet Lao, setting the stage for the next day’s exploration.
The route then winds southwest through remote countryside toward the Mekong town of Paklay, where a peaceful riverside evening awaits after a powerful and scenic journey.
A final ride south along the Mekong through flat terrain and tranquil riverside views leading back to Vientiane completes the adventure. After the bikes are returned, the evening offers a chance to unwind and celebrate the adventure with a well-earned farewell dinner.

Laos on Two Wheels FAQ

For our Laos tours, we ride the Honda CRF250. The terrain in Laos demands a bike that’s lightweight, tough, and built for off-road exploration. From muddy jungle trails to rocky mountain paths and remote backroads, the CRF250 handles it all with confidence. It’s reliable, agile, and perfectly suited for the kind of rugged adventure that makes riding in Laos unforgettable.

For the best experience in Laos, plan your ride between November and April. The dry season offers cooler temps and better road conditions, while the wet season can make remote routes difficult or impassable.

Highlights include exploring the striking limestone karsts around Vang Vieng, visiting the ancient temples of Luang Prabang, and uncovering the enigmatic Plain of Jars. The tour also features historic caves at Viengkeo and offers rich cultural experiences throughout Laos’ diverse landscapes.
