Honda FTR, 230cc, manual.
|Weekly rental:||210USD (one day free)|
The Honda FTR 230 is a fantastic touring bike. It is not too heavy, it has the power to cruise the highway with ease and overtake another vehicle to help maintain a clear road ahead. Eating dust for km on km is not fun. It is quite nimble on the road and not difficult for less experienced or slightly weaker drivers to handle.
For some reason the fuel tank is small and this results in a short range of 150km guaranteed, sometimes more. However, it is much easier to fill than the Honda Wave and Future due to the position of the fuel tank cap. The lack of a petrol gauge is not a problem as long as you know how to use the fuel lock and the large and reserve tanks.
What it is a Honda FTR good for?
This is too expensive to be a viable option for a monthly rental. As an expat rental, it would be rented on a daily basis to take a trip to somewhere like Sa Pa, Da Nang, or Dien Bien Phu. They are quite easy to drive and negotiating traffic is not a big issue apart from the extra width. The biggest problem is carrying goods, shopping. If that is what you need, installing a GIVI rear box is a good idea
As we mentioned above the FTR will handle city driving quite well. However, they are more in their element on day trips out of town and longer trips between cities. They are very comfortable for long periods on the road because of the higher seat which gives more leg room and the excellent suspension that smoothes out the road. The fuel tank, even though it is small, gives a range of 150+km which is adequate given that filling stations are easy to find. They are more suited to road driving but will handle a dirt track and a little mud if you take it slowly.
The first thing to mention is that these bikes are old but regularly maintained. We rarely have trouble with them. They are imported into Vietnam and as such the Honda Dealers often refuse to work on them and finding parts is more difficult but not impossible.
Previous experience riding a manual bike is essential. This bike can handle 02 people and backpack but be kind and don’t load it up too much. Weighing in at 119kg, it is not much heavier than the Honda Future and it is equally nimble.
They are less attractive to thieves as they are harder to strip and fence but you still need to be careful. To date, we are yet to have one stolen but at around 2,000USD a piece it is better to be safe than sorry. Check out our parking tips in Vietnam to avoid theft as it can get tricky.
We do not have a monthly rental rate for a Honda FTR as we do not wish to rent them for this period. This is because we cannot guarantee reliability without regular checking and servicing.
Daily / Weekly Rental:
The daily and weekly rental rates offer unlimited mileage, however, the deposit is either 500USD or an original passport. For ONE WAY RENTAL, there is a drop off fee of 70USD, if you decide to leave the bike in one other our other shops. This is currently available between Hanoi, Danang, and HCMC.
In addition to the bike, we provide:
- a rear rack fitted to strap you bags onto
- a U lock for extra safety
- saddlebags for luggage
- bungees to strap down items
- a helmet
We service our bikes before and after each rental. However, on a long trip, it is wise to check the bike over. We ask that you keep a note of the mileage and then tell us after around 1,500km so that we can help you get the bike serviced. You will need to pay this cost but we will refund you when you return the bike. It only costs a few dollars.
Caution: You MUST call us when having any work done on the bike. We trust you but we do not trust roadside mechanics, who may not know how to service the bikes and may overcharge you. We need to talk to them directly before any work is done. Failure to do this or monitor the mechanic can result in serious/expensive damage to the bike and you will be liable for it.
